Impervious Surface Map

  • Surface runoff is the leading cause of pollution in all waterbodies across the United States.  This gives reason to consider the amount of impervious surfaces (parking lots, roads, conventional sidewalks) that exist in our watersheds, and how we might encourage more pervious area.  When water is unable to infiltrate the ground, it travels along roadways and parking lots, picking up contaminants on its way to the nearest stream.  Preserving grassy buffers between the built environment and the banks of the Malden River is a cost-effective, common sense way of caring for its water quality.
